Charlie Bardey is a New York City born, raised, and based comedian and writer with a popular Twitter account, @chunkbardey. He’s been featured in Time Out New York and Vulture, among other places. He hosts a live show and podcast called “Exploration: Live!” with Natalie Rotter-Laitman.
☞ DELAYED GRATIFICATION: My friend’s Chrome extension, Delayed Gratification. This allows you to set delays to getting on websites, so you have to wait, like, 30 seconds before it lets you log onto Twitter. Fully blocking websites doesn’t work for me because I just disable the block, but this is just enough of a disincentive that I’m not going on reflexively, but can still go on when I REALLY need.
☞ UNTITLED GOOSE GAME: Untitled Goose Game is an amazing independent game for the Nintendo Switch, the premise of which is you are a goose in a quaint English country village whose goal is to cause as much havoc as possible. Tasks include: “Get the farmer wet” and “Trap the boy in the phone booth.” I kind of feel like readers of this newsletter are largely in the UK so I wonder if this game will be triggering to people? To me it’s amazing but I've never been in a quaint English village, so I can view the premise with some remove.
☞ MIRACLE PRODUCT: Cos RX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence. Miracle product. Lightweight moisturiser. My ride or die product!
☞ WASTE AWAY: This piece called “Waste Away” from The Baffler by Lina Mounzer about Beirut’s sewage system, which made me think about the infrastructure of grass which I really take for granted.
☞ READING: The book Johnny Would You Love Me If My Dick Were Bigger, by Brontez Purnell. So good, so fun, so sexy; amazing punk gay book.
☞ KAJILLIONAIRE: The movie Kajillionaire, directed by Miranda July. So grateful for any movie that confidently builds its own world, whimsical but with depth, heartbreaking, sweet, funny.
☞ IF YOU’RE IN NEW YORK: The stores Dream Fishing Tackle and Peter Pan Donuts – If you’re ever in New York, which maybe someday you will be or even already are, here is one of my recommendations: go to Dream Fishing Tackle, which is an incredible, overpriced vintage store in Greenpoint, dense with incredible and beautiful and surprising furniture. After (or before) you can go down the street to Peter Pan donuts, a donut shop that homemakes all their donuts. I’m actually getting sad I can’t have one of their donuts right now.
☞ EXPLORATION LIVE!: Natalie and my incredible podcast, Exploration: Live!
☞ KNIGHT TIMES: The YouTube channel “Knight Times” which posts “Unintentional ASMR” – compilation videos of medical evaluation demonstrations, hand massages and reiki. Incredible work.
♪ LISTENING TO: Rosalita (Come Out Tonight) by Bruce Springsteen. It’s about a guy convincing a girl to sneak out from her overbearing parents and party with him. It’s so hot and so good and has SUCH a strong sense of place. You literally feel like a teenager in suburban New Jersey in the '80s. The climax of the song, when everything but the drums fall out, is so stunning.
☠︎ HATES: Paywalls on informational news stories; when cars honk aggressively; when people give advice without asking more questions about the situation.
