☞ THE BBC HISTORY HOUR PODCAST: I can’t sit in silence. Or at least I haven’t tried to in a very long time, mostly thanks to the BBC History Hour podcast. Each episode is a series of short segments that chronicle historical events using primary source recordings from the BBC archive. The stories are mostly tragic and make me feel better about the petty atrocities I’ve committed in my life, none of which have been bad enough to be covered by the BBC.
☞ CLARICE LISPECTOR: She’s a writer and I don’t know what she’s talking about most of the time but I know it’s good and you sound smart as hell when you bring her up at a dinner party.
☞ FLOSSING: I like having clean teeth just fine, but the moral high ground I maintain by being a daily flosser is out of this world. If I meet somebody who seems smarter or hotter or funnier than I am, I look for the little wedges of grime between their teeth and think to myself: “disgusting.”
☞ THE TUNA MELT AT B & H DAIRY: They make their own challah bread and put some tuna salad and cheddar cheese on there and slap that puppy on the griddle for a few minutes and goddamn. The borscht is also fly as hell.
☞ MARCELLA HAZAN’S TOMATO SAUCE WITH ONION & BUTTER: I don’t know who Marcella Hazan is or how she came up with this tomato sauce recipe but it is truly a work of genius. Don’t you dare think you can let it simmer for less than 45 minutes, though.
☞ HAVING A CAR IN NEW YORK: I drive to Ikea at least once a week just to get meatballs for lunch and everybody wants to be friends with me.
