We’re back with Holly Beddingfield. Read on to find out what she’s into, and if you’re new here, hit subscribe for secret recommendations once a week.
Holly is co-founder of The Know, a daily newsletter (hoping) to help people feel better about the news. She’s from Manchester but currently lives in London.
☞ BESPOKE JEWELLERY: My nanna was a badass and left me with some amazing jewellery (most of my rings). But I especially love the bespoke pieces. The ‘MEB 68’ ring (Mark Eric Beddingfield, b.1968) was a gift to my dad from my nanna for his 18th birthday. The snake ring (right middle finger) was a gift to me from my parents and is a nod to Victorian snake jewellery, which symbolised eternal love. It's made from bits of gold from my mum's broken jewellery (random backs off earrings, snapped chains, etc), by the jewellers at Mutter’s in Manchester. They recently closed down after 140 years which is sad (read about their amazing history here) but I’m sure there’s a bunch of places who do similar things.
☞ HIYACAR: Like every other person in London I’m constantly talking about “leaving London” for some “headspace” and it feels even better when I drive to do it. I use the app Hiyacar which is simple and cheap compared to regular rentals. Box Hill and Leith Hill in Surrey are both easy trips from London. While you’re at it, the AllTrails app has good walking routes that don’t show up on Google maps.
☞ BUN AND CHEESE: A Jamaican delicacy and the perfect snack. It’s a sweet fruit bread with a thick wedge of cheese (usually Cheddar or Red Leicester). Grab from Healthy Eaters on Electric Avenue in Brixton (or make your own!).
☞ BEB’S KITCHEN: While we’re on Brixton food, Beb’s Kitchen on Acre Lane is excellent for Indian food, it's BYOB, and if you’re lucky the owner (Beb himself) will bring out the karaoke machine and let you hop on too.
☞ RUN A RACE, LET IT CHOOSE YOU: I like to run to keep myself sane and I’d always heard people say how good the vibes are on a race day. I just ran the London Landmarks Half Marathon and they were right: it was gorgeous. They close all the roads (temporary relief from pollution anxiety) and you get to run down the middle of the street by like, St Paul’s, which is really special. My neighbour (who doesn’t run) has balloted for the London Marathon every year for about 20 years and never got it, but he says if it ever happens he’ll have to train for it. I think that’s a good approach we could all try. Let it choose you.
☞ EARPLUGS: Happy Ears earplugs. For my fellow light sleepers and misophonia babies. They are the best.
☞ 24 HOURS IN MANCHESTER: I couldn’t leave without a few hometown recs! Søstrene Green and Fred Aldous for arts & crafts stuff (it rains a lot so you need indoor activities), the Craft and Design Centre for actual crafts made by artists, salt and pepper chips from pretty much any local Chinese chippy, Night & Day and SOUP for music and nights out, Sugo for pasta, Rudy’s for pizza, and if you can make it, a trip to Cheshire Oaks for discounted Doc Martens and Birkenstocks.
