We’re back with our third guest, Kathleen Sorbara. Read on to find out what she’s into, and if you’re new here, hit subscribe for secret recommendations every Monday and Wednesday.
Kathleen Sorbara is the owner of the vintage boutique Chickee’s Vintage in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. She’s here to tell us what she’s into:
☞ TOP FLOOR APARTMENTS: For a period of time last year, I lived in a second floor apartment (with someone living above me). I have weirdly never lived underneath someone in my nine years of living in NYC except for this one specific time, but I will never do that shit again. I am literally traumatised from someone stomping & quite honestly just living above me at any given hour of the day (and night). I don’t think this was a normal *living* situation above me, but I’ll spare you the details and I’ll just say that it was really bad. Thankfully, I moved out, into a top floor apartment. If you have the choice, don’t live under someone, it’s not good. A sixth floor walk up is 100% worth it. I promise.
☞ TEN PERCENT: Meditating can be a daunting daily task to take on, but Ten Percent is a lovely app that makes meditating accessible, especially if you’ve never tried it before. They offer a plethora of 10-15 minute meditations that are great introduction to a meditation practice. Personally, my favourite meditations on the app are the sleep meditations that they offer— I throw them on in the middle of the night when I’m tossing and turning in bed, and I almost always snooze right back to sleep. tenpercent.com
☞ MIKE MILLS MOVIES: First of all, Beginners is probably my favourite movie. When I’m in a mood & I want my heart twisted a bit, I’ll throw that movie on. I’ve probably watched it a dozen times. I’m not sure if it’s the perfect soundtracks, or his imperfectly perfect perspective on love, but I adore anything that Mike Mills has made. He just made a movie last year called Cmon Cmon and it was almost as good as Beginners. I haven’t been happy with a lot of *Covid times* movies that have come out lately, I think a lot of them fall flat. But Cmon Cmon is an exception, and I highly recommend watching it.
☞ RENTER’S INSURANCE: Depending on your deductible, renter’s insurance covers a portion or all of your belongings if something happens to your home (a break-in, fire, etc), but also covers your belongings in some circumstances that happen outside of your home. I had my Chanel bag stolen at a flea market last year (literally terrible) and because I had renter’s insurance I submitted a claim— and I received almost the entire cost of the bag directly into my bank account. I personally use Lemonade, it’s so easy & just an app you download on your phone, it takes maybe 20 minutes to set up. lemonade.com
☞ STATION ELEVEN: Another piece of art that has completely blown me away recently is HBO’s new series, Station Eleven. It’s like a post-apocalyptic fever dream, but not in a weird zombie way or anything like that. Mackenzie Davis a mesmerising actress and so is the woman that plays the young version of her character on the show. I’m also obsessed with the show’s post-apocalyptic wardrobe— in a world where belongings are scarce, these characters still manage to pull off insane and amazing outfits. It’s a must watch, especially if you’re a little bit depressed this winter and want to lean into that feeling a bit.
☞ DISH SOAP OIL STAINS: This doesn’t always work, but it usually does. Pump some dish soap on an oil stain immediately after the stain happens, let it sit for a day or two, and then just throw it in the wash with the rest of your clothes. Voilà! Let me know how it goes.
