Nº72: Will Hine
The South London-based gallerist selects his favourite magazines, cinemas and music.
We’re back with Will Hine. Read on to find out what he’s into, and if you’re new here, hit subscribe for secret recommendations every week.
William Hine is a gallerist based in South London, founder of an eponymous gallery that opened in Camberwell in October 2024.
☞ TURPS MAGAZINE: One magazine I often look out for in shops is Turps Painting Magazine. In their own words, it features “no advertising, no backers, no professional critics, no lifestyle drivel.” It’s mostly painters talking to other painters, and it’s a great format. I picked up copies of recent editions earlier this year at UNITOM in Manchester and Magalleria in Bath while on art travels around the UK.
Another magazine I sometimes buy in print, though unrelated to my day job, is New Scientist. Most of it goes completely over my head, but if there’s a particularly intriguing cover story, I’ll try (and often fail) to wrap my head around some new discovery about black holes, AI, climate change, or whatever is featured that week.
☞ REAL LIFE: by Amelia Barratt, published by Charles Asprey in 2022, is a fascinating text and audio collection of her performances from 2018-2021. This publication includes a beautifully crafted book and a set of flexi-discs with the audio recordings. On November 21, I’ll be opening Cut Wire, a solo exhibition of Amelia’s recent paintings, which will be on view at the gallery until December 21.
☞ ALBUM: I’ve recently been revisiting a lot of I Am Kloot, whose album Northern Skies is one of my all-time favorites. Listening to it again after many years has been a treat. Lately, I’ve also been enjoying the new Fontaines D.C. album Romance, which has been getting a lot of play over the last few weeks.
☞ CINEMAS: I have a few favorite cinemas nearby. Peckhamplex is a great option, offering all tickets at £5.99. More often, though, I end up at the Picturehouse on Lordship Lane. I also enjoy the Everyman in Crystal Palace when I’m in the mood for something a bit fancier; it’s housed in an Art Deco building from 1928 that’s been converted but still maintains much of its original character. Also, the Sunday Market in Crystal Palace Park is fantastic if you’re in the area, as is The Sourcing Table on the triangle.
☞ CAMBERWELL: of course! SE5 contains my home, my workplace, and many other places I’d recommend. Theo’s Pizza is a must, and Forza Win is fantastic. There are also several great bars and pubs nearby, including The Bear, Stormbird, and Little Cellars. And the amazing South London Gallery is just down the road.
☞ SPEAKERS: I’ve had the same Bose Mini SoundLink speaker for ten years, and it’s never let me down. I usually have it blaring to get my day started before I open up the gallery.
♪ LISTENING TO: I’ve been listening to the podcast High Strange a lot recently, which is all about UFOs and supernatural occurrences. It’s sort of a guilty pleasure that I’m not at all that guilty about.
